Drainage issues due to overgrown vegetation
Issue:
This homeowner in Ferndale was experiencing severe drainage problems caused by a backyard pond that had turned into a large swampy area near existing structures.
Site Evaluation:
After meeting with the customer and walking the property, we identified several contributing issues:
Overgrown vegetation throughout the property, especially within the existing drainage swale connected to the roadside ditch.
Thick vegetation blocking and restricting proper water flow.
Previously installed drainage pipes set at incorrect elevations.
Pipes with backfall and undersized capacity, unable to handle the volume of water discharged from the pond during the rainy season.
Solution & Work Performed:
We developed a clear game plan starting at the roadside ditch:
Mulched all overgrown vegetation to reopen drainage paths.
Located and reestablished the existing drainage swale.
Grubbed and regraded the swale using our laser grade control system to ensure proper flow.
Spread all excavated spoils onsite and covered them with mulched vegetation.
By reusing the mulched material, we eliminated the need for straw or hydroseeding. This approach saved the customer money while keeping the project compliant with municipal requirements and erosion control BMPs.
Result:
Improved drainage, restored water flow, and a significantly reduced swampy area—protecting nearby structures and improving overall site conditions.
